Board Games at the Nest!

The last week before the holidays at the Nest was all about playing board games together. On Tuesday, the main theme was historical games.

A Journey to the Times of Communist Poland (Polish People’s Republic – PPR)

Standing in line for sugar, waiting lists, goods “under the counter” — these are terms we mostly know from our grandparents’ stories. On Tuesday, we had the chance to travel back to the times of the Polish People’s Republic and experience the realities of empty shelves, supply shortages, and long queues. All thanks to the game Queue (Kolejka), created by the Institute of National Remembrance.

The game perfectly captures the atmosphere of those times, allowing us to feel the emotions our grandparents may have experienced during the classic “line battles.” The creators paid attention to every detail—the graphic design, based on authentic photos of items from the era, immerses players in the world of PPR. For us, it was a true journey into the past.

Interestingly, it wasn’t the teachers but the students who showed the better strategy and won the game, surprising everyone. The game brought us tons of joy, laughter, and unforgettable moments.

From PPR to the 16th Century

After the excitement of “shopping” in PPR times, we jumped to the 16th century to become merchants trading in precious stones. The game required logical thinking, quick reactions to changing circumstances, and predicting the moves of our opponents. We competed to earn as many prestige points as possible—and had a blast doing it.

Games, Tea, and Gingerbread – the Perfect Combo

Time flew by as we played. The fun was made even better by winter tea, homemade gingerbread, and a fantastic atmosphere. We hope to repeat board game day soon—there are still many historical eras waiting to be discovered!
